FAQ Master thesis
Cf. § 21 (2) PO:
Only students who have already earned 48 ECTS credits in the Master's program are admitted to the Master's thesis.
The registration of your master thesis is done via the examination office. Here you will find under the tab "Master-Thesis" the form "Antrag auf Vergabe einer Master-Thesis der Masterstudiengänge Wirtschaftswissenschaften", which has to be signed by your first and second supervisor. Please note that the processing time starts from the date mentioned in the form.
Cf. § 63 (1) PO:
For the Master of Business Education applies:
According to § 36, the topic of the Master's thesis is to be taken from one of the two chosen or specified focus subjects or one of the chosen supplementary subjects or the chosen second subject or from the subject General Master's Business Administration.
Cf. § 63 (2) PO:
In particular, the professors supervising the Master's program for the teaching profession in economics and the other subjects mentioned as well as, if applicable, other authorized examiners appointed by the examination board are eligible as supervisors of the Master's thesis. Die Master-Arbeit muss einen pädagogischen Bezug vorweisen können.
The Master's thesis is assessed with 18 ECTS credits. Accordingly, additional work is expected compared to the Bachelor thesis.
For the Institute of Business and Human Resource Education a page count of 60-80 pages applies.
Cf. § 22 (1) PO:
The processing time for the Master's thesis is three months. The time limit for processing the Master's thesis can be increased to up to 6 months if it is already clear at the time of application that there will be topic- or process-related interruptions in the processing possibilities and therefore the workload, which is set at 18 ECTS points, cannot be concentrated in the planned three-month period. The delay and its duration must be made credible by the student with the application. A confirmation of the supervisor is to be enclosed. The topic, task and scope of the Master's thesis are to be limited by the supervisor in such a way that the processing deadline can be met.
This may not be subsequently changed in terms of content or form!
Yes, the Institute for Business Education has created a guide for this. Please note that you only use this guide and not old versions that you might find via google etc..
Please also note that this guide only applies to the Institute for Business and Human Resource Education. For other institutes, other guidelines or formal requirements apply accordingly.
It is mandatory to attach a declaration of independence to each master's thesis, which must include the place, date and signature. For this purpose, the official template of the examination office must be used, which can be found on the page of the examination office under the tab "Master's thesis" under "Formatting, declaration and binding".
For the Institute of Business and Human Resource Education, the following applies: the declaration of independence is attached to the appendix without the use of page numbers.
The Master's thesis must be submitted by the deadline bound in duplicate and additionally in electronic form (CD). Theses in ring binder format will not be accepted. The date of submission is to be kept on file.
Please hand in your work at the Study Information Center. You can find the opening hours here. Outside the opening hours you can drop the paper in the mailbox of the examination office (usually Hohenheim Castle is open until 7 p.m.). You can also send the paper by mail (by registered mail, you need a proof of delivery). If you send it by mail, the date of the postmark will determine whether it has been submitted on time. If the postmark is illegible, you will need to provide a "registered mail receipt" (proof from the post office of when the item was sent).
Cf. § 23 (4) PO:
The Master's thesis should be evaluated immediately by both reviewers, but no later than three months after submission. The chairperson of the examination board shall ensure that the deadline is not exceeded. The assessment is to be communicated to the examined person by the examination office.
If the Master's thesis is the last achievement in your degree program, the certificate documents will be issued automatically after graduation, usually within 2-4 weeks. You will be notified in writing by the Examination Office as soon as your certificate is ready for collection at the SIZ (Study Information Center). You can then pick up your certificate in person at the SIZ or have it sent to you. If it is to be sent (the Examination Office sends by registered mail to addresses within Germany), please inform the Examination Office by e-mail. The Examination Office will send your certificate by registered mail to your address stored in the EDP system. If you wish to have it sent to a different address, please inform the Examinations Office in good time.
If a performance other than the Master's thesis is your final performance, please apply for the issuance of your certificate when your online grade report shows all grades. You can get a form for this here under the tab "Forms".
If additional completed subjects or subject study duration are to be included in the transcript, please be sure to request this prior to receiving your final performance.
